The MG09 series is Toshiba's first HDD that uses FC-MAMR (magnetic flux control type microwave assisted magnetic recording method). As a result, the storage capacity has increased by 12.5% to 18TB and the power consumption per capacity has been reduced by approximately 10% compared to the 16TB HDD, which is the previous generation product.

Information such as why Toshiba chose the MAMR method and what kind of technology it is can be found in ' Toshiba Review Vol. 74, No. 6 ' announced in November 2019.

Since the recording method is conventional CMR (Perpendicular Magnetic Recording), it is a model suitable for replacing the HDD used in conventional systems.

In the near-line HDD market, rivals Seagate and Western Digital are both commercializing 18TB HAD, which will allow Toshiba to compete on the same line.
