Research results that 'her parents' experiences are inherited and passed on to their offspring'

In the 19th century, Austria's priest, Gregor Johann Mendel , discovered from the pea breeding experiments that the shapes and properties of living beings are inherited to offspring. Since that time, it has been said that the only thing that is inherited by the offspring is the element possessed naturally in the form of 'gene', but in recent years it has been pointed out that the possibility of inheriting stress and memory of the parent is also indicated. Under the circumstances, a research team at the Geisel School of Medicine has reported new experimental results showing that 'the experiences acquired by parents are inherited to children'.

Study finds that parental 'memory' is inherited across generations

Drosophila melanogaster tend to lay eggs around diets containing ethanol when they sense the presence of parasitic bees that parasitize larvae. It seems that it is difficult for the parasitoid to take away life if the larva eats food that contains ethanol.

The research team bred 40 female and 10 male Drosophila melanogaster animals, and 20 female parasitoids for four days together, to be the “F0 generation”. At the same time, the same number and ratio of Drosophila melanogaster were bred without any contact with parasitoids as a control group.

In the F0 generation, 94% of eggs were laid on a substrate containing ethanol. On the other hand, in the control group which was not threatened by the parasitoids, eggs laid on a substrate containing ethanol accounted for approximately 20% of the total.

Then, the research team bred 'F1 generation' that was born from F0 generation eggs without touching the parasitoids. Then, 73% of eggs produced by the F1 generation, which should not know parasitoids, were laid on a substrate containing ethanol. This result means that the F1 generation inherited the threat of the parasitic bee experienced by the parent F0 generation, the research team says.

The following graph shows the percentage of eggs laid on a substrate containing ethanol (vertical axis) for each generation (horizontal axis). The blue bar is the strain of the control group that does not know the parasitoids, and the red bar is the strain of the F0 generation that was threatened by the parasitoids. The percentage of eggs laid on a substrate containing ethanol did not exceed 40% in the control group, even if the generations were repeated, while in the F0 generation line, although it decreased with each generation, It can be seen that the majority of eggs were laid on a substrate containing ethanol until the F4 generation.

From this result, the research team insists that the inherited trait acquired as 'ethanol preference in spawning' has caused the offspring to also lay eggs on a substrate containing ethanol. .

Furthermore, the research team found that ethanol preference is promoted in Drosophila melanogaster's egg laying because one of the factors is that expression of a substance called '

neuropeptide F' is suppressed in a specific region of the fly's brain. I found it.

Dr. Juliana Bodzler, who was the lead author of the dissertation, said that the motivation for the experiment was 'it is not believed that neurally-coded behavior is passed across generations, but our research team We wanted to test the possibility that the “remembrance” of our experience would be inherited by environmentally induced changes. ”

'The results of Bozler et al.'S research are not only the biology and epigenetics of Drosophila melanogaster, but also the basic mechanisms of genetic inheritance in organisms,' said G. Bélson, professor of molecular biology and systems biology at Geisel School of Medicine. There is also the possibility of elucidating it. '

Also of particular interest is the conservation of signaling functions such as neuropeptide F and neuropeptide Y in humans, Bosco said. The results of this experiment show that parents who have experienced dependence on drugs and alcohol have an impact on their offspring. I hope to be able to gain deeper insights about
