An illustrated guide to the Atomic Bombs By Ryan Crierie

In order to manufacture the atomic bomb during World War II, scientists in the United States, Britain and Canada were mobilized all the timeThe Manhattan Project"is. This plan started in 1942, the world's first atomic bomb experiment was conducted in July 1945, and atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima on August 6th and Nagasaki on 9th of the same month. More than 300,000 casualties came out with only two bombs. This "Manhattan Project"Origin of nameThat was because the project was advanced in Manhattan in the USA. The first headquarters of the plan was a skyscraper across the street from Manhattan's Town Hall. Manhattan plan is being promoted in more than 10 places such as Columbia University which is one of the most prestigious private universities in the world and various warehouses and corners of skyscrapers, all of which were all in Manhattan, so the name of the plan It is said that it became the name "Manhattan Project".

The tubular shape shown in the following image is a cylinder of nuclear fissile warhead type (gun barrel type) made in the Manhattan ProjectShimaneAn experimental casing (outer shell) of a prototype atomic bomb called. Behind them are heavy machinery and people's hands are transported to Nagasaki in Japan on August 9, 1945 by an atomic bombFat Man"is. It is unknown whether this Fatman is the early type 1222 type (it became such a name because more than 1200 bolts were necessary in the casing) or 1561 type which was easier to assemble and evolved robustly.

◆ Initial bomb assembly and operation work
The following image was taken of a situation checking the shell part of the atomic bomb. The outer shell parts that will wrap the bomb inside equipment seems to have been subjected to various tests with the parts actually used for atomic bombs being loaded although the fissile material is not included.

Shown on the left side is an internal device equipped with Fatman's implosion lens etc. This is where it is attached to the outer shell part on the right side.

This isLos Alamos National LabIt is posted on the site of (LANL), "Little boyPicture in the process of being assembled.

Little boy is an atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. The following picture shows that testing or charging the parts before putting the inner unit in the outer shell.

Francis Birch is the man on the left touching the little boy. He wrote "L-11" which is the unit number of Little Boy in the outer shell part, and Norman Ramsey is the man on the right who is watching Mr. Birch. Both are scientists involved in the manufacture of atomic bombs during World War II.

Final assembly work
Fatman who finished the final assembly repairs the gap of the casing with putty, is sprayed with the sealing agent from above, and is carried to the target point by plane.

Fatman in the assembled state is kore. At the tip part of Fatman, a male is repairing the gap with a putty.

And puffing the sealant finished.

The tail fin part, the tip part of the bomb, and the work clothes that men wear have Fatman's logo.

Fatman's color photograph after painting the putty and spraying the sealant is like this. The outer shell is a yellow color reminiscent of radioactive signs.

When the atomic bomb was completed, the assembly worker said he wrote his name and signature.

The sign of the worker is perfect for the tail fin part as well.

"A Second Kiss for Hirohito!" (Hirohito was the emperor of Japan at the time of World War II), signed Fatman, Major General W.R. Purnell of the US Navy. The message "First Message For Hirohito" was written in the atomic bomb little boy who was dropped to Japan for the first time.

Fatman who finished signing to the outer shell by stakeholders and was finally transported to the airport.

◆ Carrying bombs
The finished bomb is covered, pulled by a towing car and heads to the airport.

This is a space to store atomic bombs made in the airfield.

This hole is now like this.

Carrying in. People carrying the atomic bomb carrying work are all naked in upper body, I do not think that it is a daunting task very much during the carrying of nuclear weapons.

And in storage space ......

Finally arrived. Place a metal stick on the large storage space and place a towing vehicle on top of it.

The cable is disconnected from the towing vehicle ......

Lift the bomb with the hydraulic lift for each towing vehicle, and hit the metal sticks on which the towing cars were lodged in manifold manually.

And slowly drop off with a lift ......

Successful storage completed. For security reasons it seems that the waterproof seat had been kept on.

After that, the bomber "Enola · Gay" to carry the atomic bomb to Japan appeared.

While many stakeholders were watching slowly retreating, they arrived at the atomic bomb.

Little boy finally showed up in the loading stage.

Lift with hydraulic pump ......

And the Little Boy is stored & fixed in the bomb warbear of the bomber and it is transported.

This is a little boy stored in Enola · Gay.

There is also an unusual page that summarizes the photographs of all the scientists involved in the "Manhattan Project".
