The top five companies in the smartphone market in the first quarter of 2024 are as follows, with Samsung coming in first with approximately 60.1 million units shipped. Samsung's market share for the quarter was 20.8%, down 0.7% from the same period last year. It is believed that Samsung's top spot was due to the smartphone ' Galaxy S24 ' series announced in January 2024.

In second place was Apple, with shipments just 10 million units behind Samsung. The number of shipments fell sharply by 9.6% compared to the same period last year, suggesting that the battle for the top brand position has intensified.

The Chinese manufacturer Transsion was the fastest growing manufacturer in the quarter, growing by 84.99% year-on-year. The company dominated markets in Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Latin America, shipping 28.5 million units in the first quarter alone, but its global market share fell short of 10%.

A mobile analyst at IDC said, 'As expected, the smartphone recovery continues, with market optimism gradually spreading among top brands. Apple took the top spot at the end of 2023, but Samsung regained the top spot in the first quarter of 2024. IDC expects these two to maintain their positions in the high-end market, while Huawei's resurgence in China and the notable growth of Xiaomi, Transsion, OPPO/OnePlus, and vivo are likely to encourage Apple and Samsung to seek new areas to expand and diversify.'

Apple is reportedly diversifying its supply chain and focusing on Indian production bases. It has been revealed that 14% of iPhones will be produced in India in 2023, which Bloomberg said 'suggests that the company is accelerating its efforts to reduce its reliance on China.'
