I tried to verify the performance of Google's genuine smartphone 'Pixel 7 Pro' such as 30x zoom and macro shooting Review

On October 13, 2022, the Google genuine Android smartphones “Pixel 7” and “Pixel 7 Pro” appeared. The

appearance of both models is similar to the previous generation 'Pixel 6' and 'Pixel 6 Pro' , but the Pixel 7 Pro has 'up to 30x super resolution zoom function' and 'macro function that allows you to get closer to the subject'. A major update has been made to the camera. Therefore, in order to verify the performance of various shooting functions installed in Pixel 7 Pro, I tried to take pictures.

◆ Contents
・ 1: 5x optical zoom & up to 30x digital zoom
・ 2: Macro mode that brings you closer to the subject
・ 3: A blur correction function that is ideal for intense activities
・ 4: Cinematic mode that allows you to shoot impressive movies by blurring the background

◆ 1: 5x optical zoom & up to 30x digital zoom
On the back of Pixel 7 Pro are three types of cameras: '50 megapixel wide-angle camera', '12 megapixel ultra-wide camera' and '48 megapixel telephoto camera'. Also, in the standard camera app, you can select the shooting magnification from '0.5x', '1x', '2x', and '5x' with one tap.

In addition, by pinching in on the screen, you can zoom in up to 30x. In addition, when the magnification is set to 16x or higher, live view for framing assistance including the outside of the shooting range is displayed in the upper left of the screen.

Below are pictures taken from the same position while actually changing the shooting magnification. In addition, the examples in the article have not been processed other than reduction unless otherwise specified.

First, the pictures taken at 0.5x are below. The camera used is a '12 megapixel ultra-wide camera' with a spec angle of view of 125.8 degrees.

This is what 1x magnification looks like. The camera uses a '50 megapixel wide-angle camera' with an angle of view of 82 degrees.

The 2x magnification is a digital zoom of the '50 megapixel wide-angle camera'. Google only appeals as 'a high-quality super-resolution zoom function comparable to a dedicated 2x optical zoom', and it is a workmanship that does not notice that it is a digital zoom.

When shooting at 5x, it switches to '48 megapixel telephoto camera'. The color is different from the 0.5x and 1x photos.

And the picture taken with 30x zoom is below. I was able to take a picture of a bicycle passing through a fairly distant bridge. The image quality is acceptable enough when viewing the entire photo on a smartphone screen size.

I cut out a part of the photo taken with 30x zoom at the same size. It seems that it is not suitable for displaying on a large screen or printing because the noise that is painted out when viewed at the same size is annoying.

When shooting at 30x zoom, it does not zoom toward the center of the photo that can be taken at 5x, but it behaves like the Pixel 7 Pro automatically recognizes and tracks the subject. For this reason, when framing at 30x zoom, tracking has the opposite effect and I felt it was very difficult to frame.

Having said that, the 30x zoom makes it possible to shoot long-distance subjects and shoot without being wary of animals. The framing problem can be avoided by completing the framing once at 5x zoom and then zooming to 30x.

◆ 2: Macro mode that brings you closer to the subject
The Pixel 7 Pro automatically activates macro mode when you bring the camera close to your subject, allowing you to take very close shots. Below are pictures of flowers taken in macro mode.

The following pictures are close-ups of the jeans worn by the editorial staff. I was able to take a clear picture of the mesh of the denim fabric.

Cut the canelé in half and take a close-up of the cross section. In macro mode, you can clearly shoot the details of the subject, so it seems to be useful in various situations.

◆3: Image stabilization function ideal for intense activities
With Pixel 7 Pro, you can select from four types of blur correction modes when shooting movies: ``Standard'', ``Lock'', ``Active'', and ``Cinematic shooting''. I can do it.

Below is a movie taken with the blur correction mode 'standard' and 'active' showing how the stairs are dashed up and down. Although it does not have the same blur correction effect as an action camera such as '

GoPro HERO11 Black ', it demonstrated a sufficient blur correction effect to share on SNS.

◆ 4: Cinematic mode that blurs the background and shoots impressive movies
In Pixel 7 Pro's cinematic mode, you can shoot a movie in which the subject is selected and the part other than the subject is greatly blurred. You can select the subject with just one tap on the screen.

Below is a movie that was actually taken by selecting a bicycle in cinematic mode.

I cut out around the bicycle from a part of the movie. The bokeh that occurs in cinematic mode is not an optical one, but a computational one. For this reason, it seems difficult to create natural bokeh according to the distance, and unnatural bokeh and uneven parts occurred around the handle and frame.

The Pixel 7 Pro will be on sale from October 13, 2022. You can also check the appearance of Pixel 7 Pro in detail in the following article.
