"Stranger Visions" which collects DNA from the cigarette butts and gums picked up in town and restores the face with a 3D printer

DNA analysisIs also used to identify suspects in crime, based on DNA information obtained from chewing gum, tobacco cigarette butts, hair and nails falling in the asphalt of the city, create owners face, output with a 3D printer It is that the artistsHeather Dewey-Hagborg'S project "Stranger Visions"is.

Based on the samples actually sampled by Mr. Hagborg and the DNA information of the sample, the face created by the 3D printer is as follows.

◆ 01
Collection date: June 1, 2012 12:15
Collect Location: New York Brooklyn Mitr Rd 1381

DNA was taken from cigarette butts.

DNA information found out below.

Mitochondrial DNAHaplo Group: H2a2a1 (Eastern Europe)
SRY gene: Yes
gender male
HERC2 gene: AA
Eye color: brown

When you output the owner's face with a 3D printer based on the above information, it will look like this.

◆ 02
Collection date: June 1, 2012 12:15
Collection place: New York Brooklyn Him Road Street Might Street

It also collected cigarette butts of cigarettes.

The DNA information found out is as follows.

Haprogroup of mitochondrial DNA: T2b (Europe)
SRY gene: none
gender female
HERC2 gene: AA
Eye color: brown

The faces created are as follows. This time it is a woman.

◆ 03
Collection date: June 1, 2012 12:15
Collect Location: New York Brooklyn Stannop Street Wilson Street

This time it is collected from the gum that was thrown away in the road.

The DNA information found out is as follows.

Haplo group of mitochondrial DNA: D1 (Native American South America)
SRY gene: yes
gender male
HERC2 gene: AA
Eye color: brown

The outputted face is like this.

◆ 04
Collection date: June 1, 2012 12:20
Collect Location: New York Brooklyn Flat Bush Street 33

Take DNA again from cigarette butt.

Haplo group of mitochondrial DNA: L1b (West African African American)
SRY gene: yes
gender male
HERC2 gene: AA
Eye color: brown

Face is here.

In the above sample chewing gum and cigarette butts were used, but also DNA was taken from hair and nails in addition to this. To Brooklyn in New YorkGenspaceThere is a DIY biological laboratory, Hagborg brings the material collected at the laboratory and analyzes it there.Polymerase chain reactionTo amplify the DNA and submit the reaction results to the laboratory. ThenSequenceYou can receive the text file, so use the bioinformatics program to clarify what allele is present in the sample. And for this project we used software created by Hagborg to input sex, eye color, birth, hair and skin color etc in 3D model based on information obtained by DNA analysis, That is to make the owner's face.

How long is the face of the work accurate? Regarding that, Hagborg says that the work is not totally reproducing himself, it is only creating a possible face from elements such as sex, eye color, mother's race. This is because research on genes related to human face difference is still in the early stages, but it is thought that it will be possible to make more accurate faces as genetic studies progress.

Below is a box with sample placed at the exhibition.

DNA information analyzed using software is also published on GitHub.

Stranger Visions discovered a hair stuck in a crack of a wall when Mr. Hagborg was receiving therapy and said, "Whose hair is this one's hair and how can we know the owner from one hair? It started from the point where I wondered "What is it? When I got home, Mr. Hagborg noticed that there was a substance that would be a material of the genes around him, and the Stranger Visions came to be born.

Although the code written by Mr. Hagborg is not open source, it seems that friends are using it freely. If you want to know more about software,Please contact me by e-mail,apparently.
