OpenAI has announced that it has updated the shopping features on ChatGPT, making it available worldwide to users who want to virtually try on clothes and accessories, as well as a favorites feature that allows users to save their favorite items to review later.
In April 2025, OpenAI updated its shopping feature, announcing a function that would allow users to directly purchase products presented by ChatGPT. However, according to technology media outlet TechCrunch, this feature 'did not perform as expected, forcing OpenAI to change course.'

I didn't need to buy carry on luggage, sunglasses, or a brim hat. This feels so disappointing. At least make me a personalized shopping list of things I actually need!! https://t.co/hmH2iiE8lF pic.twitter.com/TNQIEwK9z2
OpenAI's 'virtual try-on' feature is based on ' ChatGPT Images 2.5, ' which the company announced on September 8, 2026.
When a user clicks the 'Try on' button displayed on clothing or accessories presented in ChatGPT, they are prompted to upload a photo of themselves using either 'Take a Selfie' or 'Select a Selfie.' Once the image is uploaded, 'ChatGPT Images 2.5' generates an image of the user wearing the selected item. Users can also upload screenshots of web pages or product images and ask ChatGPT to make them appear as if they are wearing the item.
A 'Try on' button was already displayed for some items.

Another new shopping-related feature is the ability to save items suggested by ChatGPT to your 'favorites.' According to OpenAI, if you virtually try on an item you've saved to your favorites, the try-on image will also be saved.
To add an item to your favorites, simply click the icon displayed in the upper right corner of the item.
In addition, ChatGPT advertises that users can describe a fashion style they'd like to try, and then find the necessary items to complete that outfit. They also say that users can upload photos of celebrity outfits and find out which items the celebrity is wearing that they can purchase.
OpenAI isn't the only company that has released an AI-powered virtual try-on feature. Google has also released 'Doppl,' an app that lets you virtually try on clothes of your choice.
