Nitter was a service that allowed users to view X without needing an account. On August 24, 2026, the service was shut down and the repositories were archived after X sent a cease and desist order requesting the permanent deletion of the instances and project repositories.

Nitter's developer, Zedeus, complied with the demands but maintained a fighting stance, raising funds in cryptocurrency and receiving support from a community that loved Nitter. Then, on September 6, 2026, he unarchived the Nitter repository and made the source code available again for use by instance operators such as XCancel.

Zedeus has announced that he has secured legal counsel to fight the shutdown requests and has declared that the project will continue. Although XCancel is now available , the main nitter.net instance has not yet resumed normal operation.

Zedeus also revealed that the 'deadline' X has given is 5 PM Eastern Standard Time on September 9, 2026 (7 AM Japan Standard Time on September 10), and that he plans to release information about the 'fight' around that time.
