ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok all went down at almost the same time.

Late at night on September 3, 2026, the AI services of three major companies shut down almost simultaneously. The reason why the timing coincided remains unclear.

The affected systems were OpenAI 's ChatGPT, Anthropic 's Claude, and SpaceXAI 's Grok. Grok went down about two hours earlier, followed by ChatGPT and Claude at almost the same time. As of the time of writing, the issues have been resolved.
During the outage, chat AIs from various companies, as well as API services, experienced unresponsive errors, causing widespread disruption in the United States and other countries as it coincided with the start of business hours for many companies.
Anthropic staff member CJ Avilla posted, 'Due to infrastructure issues, we are experiencing partial outages with Claude Code, API, and claude.ai.'
An infrastructure issue is causing a partial outage across Claude Code, the API, and https://t.co/JQms60I8iw . We're working on it but don't have an ETA yet. We'll post here when that changes, and quickest place for updates is always https://t.co/ZyS6p0rEnb

SpaceXAI reported that 'the issue was caused by a failure at our Memphis computing center.'
We are sorry for the issues you may have experienced with Grok following an outage at our Memphis compute center this morning. We'd also like to apologize to our impacted compute partners.

All systems have now been restored and are functioning nominally.
It is unclear whether the OpenAI and Anthropic outages were caused by the same Memphis facility as SpaceXAI, and we await official statements from both OpenAI and Anthropic.
Some analysts suggest that the simultaneous shutdown of AI services, on which modern people rely so heavily, meant that 'for just a brief moment, millions of people had to use their brains again.'
