Kimi K3, a Chinese AI with performance comparable to Claude Fable 5, has become so popular that it has run out of GPUs, forcing a temporary suspension of new subscriptions. Some are saying this is 'better than Anthropic's response.'

Kimi K3 has received far more love than we expected, and our GPUs are feeling it.

Over the past 48 hours, demand has pushed close to the limits of our current capacity. To protect the experience of existing subscribers, we're temporarily pausing new subscriptions and…
Kimi K3 is a large-scale model with 2.8 trillion parameters and a context window of 1 million tokens, and has achieved scores that surpass the cutting edge closed models Claude Fable 5 and GPT-5.6 Sol in multiple tests. Kimi K3 is released as an open model and is also available as a product through subscription services and APIs.

According to their official X account, demand for the Kimi K3 exceeded expectations, and Moonshot AI's GPU capacity was no longer sufficient to handle the demand within 48 hours of its announcement. Moonshot AI has temporarily suspended new subscriptions to prioritize the experience of its existing subscribers. Checking Moonshot AI's pricing page reveals that all plans are 'Sold Out.'

China has banned the import of NVIDIA's high-performance AI chips, and AI services from Chinese companies such as DeepSeek have also been criticized for 'unstable connections immediately after release.' There are online posts suggesting that 'Alibaba is a major investor in Moonshot AI, and the Kimi series competes with the Qwen series for Alibaba Cloud's GPU capacity.'
Alibaba is a major investor of Moonshot. Kimi, in turn, uses a big chunk of AliCloud GPUs (oftentimes competing away Qwen team's resources)

Furthermore, Nicolas Bustamante, an AI researcher at Microsoft, points out that the GPU shortage is not just a problem in China but a global issue, stating that shortages are occurring not only in GPUs but in every aspect of AI data centers, including 'land,' 'permits,' 'power,' 'chips,' 'construction,' and 'cooling.'
Guys, the world is so compute constrained. I honestly don't understand how anyone can think otherwise.

Almost nobody is seriously using AI today, and we're already hitting capacity. Everything is a bottleneck: land for data centers, permits, electricity, grid connections, chips,… https://t.co/Qk0pTn4xTq
Some say that Moonshot AI's decision to 'stop new subscriptions' is 'better than Anthropic's approach of 'reducing usage for existing users in order to increase new users.''

> Moonshot - stops new revenue. no lag for existing customers.
> Anthropic - cuts 50% usage of existing customers to serve new ones
that tells you everything you need to know why anthropic hates open… https://t.co/lUuAD24YyB
Furthermore, the overseas media outlet The Information has reported , citing sources, that 'Moonshot AI has begun the process of seeking investor approval for an IPO on the Hong Kong market.'
