Taste test review of Matsunoya's katsu curry: 'Founding Beef Loin Katsu Curry' & 'Founding Beef Extra Thick Rib Loin Katsu Curry'

Matsunoya, a tonkatsu (pork cutlet) specialty restaurant in the Matsuya Foods group, has started serving katsu curry made with Matsuya's popular '

Founding Beef Curry ' from 3 PM on July 8, 2026. There are two types: ' Founding Beef Loin Katsu Curry ' and ' Founding Beef Extra Thick Rib Loin Katsu Curry, ' so I ordered both to see what they tasted like.

It's a little complicated, but Matsunoya operates in two formats: 'Matsuya/Matsunoya combined stores' and 'Matsunoya standalone stores.' At the 'Matsuya/Matsunoya combined stores,' you could previously eat the 'Founding Beef Curry' and the 'Founding Beef Loin Cutlet Curry.' From 3 PM on July 8, 2026, the 'Founding Beef Curry' and the 'Founding Beef Loin Cutlet Curry' also became available at standalone Matsunoya stores, and a new 'Founding Beef Extra Thick Rib Loin Cutlet Curry,' topped with a thick-cut pork cutlet, was also introduced.

And so, we arrived at Matsunoya.

The restaurant's signature beef curry is being promoted.

I ordered the regular-sized Founder Beef Loin Cutlet Curry (980 yen including tax) and the regular-sized Founder Beef Extra Thick Rib Loin Cutlet Curry (1170 yen including tax).

It was served in just under 10 minutes after ordering.

This is what the original Beef Loin Cutlet Curry looks like. The cutlet is served in a way that it doesn't touch the curry sauce.

The curry is mild, like a sweet curry made with onions and beef simmered slowly. The beef is in small pieces, so it's not a curry with large chunks of beef, but rather a curry that concentrates the flavor of beef. You can taste the spiciness of pepper, but it's not very hot.

The pork loin cutlet has a crispy coating, and you can enjoy the satisfying bite of the meat. The pork loin cutlet and curry are a great match. However, Matsunoya's pork loin cutlet is already well-seasoned even without any sauce, so it wasn't like 'the curry sauce and pork loin cutlet combine to create a new flavor!' Rather, they each existed as separate entities.

The restaurant's signature extra-thick beef ribeye cutlet curry is served in a way that allows you to see the cross-section of the cutlet.

Here's what the extra-thick rib loin cutlet (left) and a regular loin cutlet (right) look like side-by-side. As the name suggests, the extra-thick rib loin cutlet is thick and has a lot of fat.

It's characterized by its generous amount of fat and tender texture. Eating the extra-thick ribeye cutlet on its own might give you heartburn, but when combined with curry, you can enjoy the sweetness of the fat and eat it down smoothly.

The way the cutlet is served so that it doesn't come into contact with the curry sauce is a nice touch, as it allows for various ways of eating it, such as 'eating it plain without the curry sauce' or 'eating it with plenty of curry sauce.' Also, both the pork loin cutlet and the extra-thick rib loin cutlet can be cut with a spoon, so there was absolutely no difficulty in eating them.

Incidentally, the original beef curry is also available as a retort curry, and you can get a set of 5 for 1975 yen (395 yen per serving) including tax on Amazon.co.jp. Also, Matsunoya's pork loin cutlet is available as a frozen food, and you can get a set of 20 for 6980 yen (349 yen per serving) including tax on Amazon.co.jp.
