PlayStation is removing video content purchased by users from their libraries, including popular titles such as 'Terminator 2' and 'The Evil Dead.'

While the PlayStation Store , PlayStation's official online store, currently only allows game purchases, it was possible to purchase and rent video content such as movies and anime until August 2021. This purchased video content can still be viewed on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and other devices even after the video content sales and rental service ended. However, some users have reported that this purchased video content is being deleted from their libraries without their consent.

In March 2021, PlayStation announced it would discontinue the sale and rental of video content on the PlayStation Store. Vanessa Lee, head of video business at Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), which develops and operates PlayStation, cited the rise of subscription-based streaming services like Netflix and ad-supported streaming services like Spotify as one of the reasons for ending the sale and rental service. It was also emphasized that even if the sale and rental service for video content on the PlayStation Store ends, content previously purchased will remain available.

However, due to a content licensing agreement between PlayStation and StudioCanal , hundreds of films owned by the studio will no longer be available on PlayStation platforms after September 1, 2026. Even purchased video content will become unavailable, and popular titles such as ' Terminator 2 ,' ' Total Recall ,' ' The Evil Dead ,' and ' The Deer Hunter ' will be among those removed.
PlayStation has announced to users via email that some video content will no longer be viewable, and screenshots of this announcement are circulating on social media. X (formerly Twitter) user somatyk posted, 'Sony's operating profit for fiscal year 2025 is $7.535 billion (approximately 1.45 trillion yen), but it seems they are happy to betray their customers if given the opportunity.'
