Bungie is a game studio that has worked on series such as 'Halo,' 'Destiny,' and 'Marathon,' and has been continuing its operations under Sony Interactive Entertainment since 2022.
On June 25, 2026, it was announced that the Bungie team would be undergoing layoffs. According to the announcement, 'a large number of employees, including most members of the Destiny team and some members of the Marathon team,' would be affected. Layoffs would also be implemented in the Sony Interactive Entertainment team that supports Bungie's business operations.
In May 2026, Bungie announced the end of development on 'Destiny 2,' which they had been working on for approximately 12 years. At that time, Bungie stated that they would be 'starting a new journey as a studio.'
Furthermore, 'Marathon,' which was released in March 2026, is scheduled to receive new content until at least the end of 2026.

According to information reported in April 2026, Bungie has a total of 850 employees. Previously, about 300 of them were involved in Marathon, while the remaining 550 were developing Destiny 2. However, the number of Marathon development team members gradually began to surpass those working on Destiny 2.
According to documents filed by Sony Interactive Entertainment, 292 employees are scheduled to be laid off at its headquarters in Bellevue, Washington.
Helmen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment's Studio Business Group, said, 'This is sad news for our talented colleagues. This decision was made after extensive discussion and careful consideration, and I would like to explain how we arrived at this conclusion. Over the past few months, we have worked with Bungie's management to consider the studio's long-term direction, development priorities, necessary resources, and role in our broader portfolio strategy. After considering several options, we concluded that a reduction in staff was necessary to align the studio's resources with our current priorities and long-term goals. Marathon is an important part of our portfolio, and we will continue to support the team as they further develop the strong foundation built in seasons 1 and 2 and work on nurturing activities for future projects. It is too early to discuss details at this time, but we have high expectations for the creativity and possibilities to come.'
