It has been revealed that iPadOS 27 will no longer support the 8th generation iPad and the 5th generation iPad mini.

At Apple's annual developer conference,

WWDC26 , held on June 9, 2026 (Tuesday), the next version of iPadOS, ' iPadOS 27 ,' was announced. While iOS 27 , also announced at the same time, will support iPhone 11 and later models, just like iOS 26, Apple's published list of compatible devices for iPadOS 27 revealed that the 8th generation iPad and 5th generation iPad mini will no longer be supported.

iPadOS 27 promises app integration using Siri AI and Apple Intelligence, child safety features, and overall OS performance improvements. In particular, Apple has stated that browsing and transferring files to external drives will be up to five times faster with iPadOS 27.

However, according to Apple's list of compatible devices for iPadOS 27, the iPad Pro is supported from the 4th generation onwards for the 12.9-inch model, and from the 2nd generation onwards for the 11-inch model.

For iPad Air, the 13-inch iPad Air is supported if it has an A2 chip or later, while the 11-inch iPad Air is supported if it has an A2, M3, or M4 chip, or if it has an A14 Pro chip (4th generation or later).

The standard iPad models eligible for this update are the iPad (A16) and the 9th generation and later. This means that the 8th generation iPad cannot be updated to iPadOS 27.

For iPad mini, only models with the A17 Pro chip and the 6th generation and later are compatible with iPadOS 27. The 5th generation iPad mini was compatible with iPadOS 26, but will no longer be supported with iPadOS 27 and later.

The following models will no longer be supported in iPadOS 27. Models equipped with the A12 Bionic or A12X Bionic will no longer be supported.

iPad Pro 12.9 inches 3rd generation (equipped with A12X Bionic)
11 inches 1st generation (equipped with A12X Bionic)
iPad Air 3rd generation (equipped with A12 Bionic)
iPad 8th generation (equipped with A12 Bionic)
iPad mini 5th generation (equipped with A12 Bionic)

Furthermore, watchOS 27 supports Apple Watch Series 10 and later, Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later, and Apple Watch SE3, but does not support Apple Watch Series 6-9, the original Apple Watch Ultra, or Apple Watch SE2. In particular, the Apple Watch Series 9 will lose support for a major OS update after only three years.
