◆ 'Rain, rain, go away, don't lie' synopsis
'Ame Ame Fure Fure Uso Yande' is a story that is almost entirely rainy, spanning approximately 200 pages. The title logo also features raindrops and a teru teru bozu (a traditional Japanese doll used to ward off rain).
The reason it rains almost throughout the entire story isn't because it's the rainy season, but rather because of a boy named Kai who's been described as a 'disaster.' Kai is a 'rain man' who has been designated a 'major man-made disaster' by a national agency, and he hates rain because it rains wherever he goes and wherever he lives. On the other hand, Nao, a girl who loves rain, is in high spirits because of the continuous rain.
Nao tried to get Kai's attention after he transferred to her school, but Kai responded coldly. Kai, whose fate as a 'rain man' had shaken him to his core, had closed himself off emotionally.
Despite Nao's persistent attempts to get close to him, Kai reveals his secret: that he is a 'rain man' known as a 'disaster.' He explains that being a rain man isn't just a superstition or rumor, but a powerful curse that has prevented him from ever seeing the sun since birth. Because he causes torrential rain wherever he goes, he isn't even allowed to live a free life.
Nao was rejected when she confided a serious problem to Kai, but she couldn't forget how sad and distressed he was, and she kept trying to approach him without giving up. If he hates the rain, then make it stop. If it doesn't stop, then go somewhere where there is no rain. She wants to show the sun to Kai, who says he has never seen it.
And so, Nao and Kai try every method they can think of. They hang up teru teru bozu (weather dolls), pray for sunshine at a shrine and offer 80 yen as a donation. If it still doesn't clear up, they try flying a plane to fly away the rain clouds, or go looking for a 'sunshine man' who is also classified as a 'disaster.' The time limit is just two weeks, the length of time Kai, the rain man, is allowed to stay in the same place.
