The issue began with a 2025 lawsuit filed by the International Workers' Union (IWGB) against Rockstar Games. The workers alleg that Rockstar Games' dismissal of 31 employees in 2025 was an attempt to 'crush the union.'

Rockstar Games claims the employee in question was involved in leaking confidential information, but IWGB counters that they consider this to be the most blatant and brutal act of union-busting, as the employee was fired immediately after the company achieved a significant milestone of 10% union membership, which would have been a major step towards union recognition.

After the incident became public, protests were held in Paris, London, Edinburgh, New York, and other cities, and since British citizens were also among those dismissed, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer promised an investigation.

As the unrest escalated, employee union membership also accelerated, and in May 2026, the union was officially established. The name of the newly formed union is 'Rockstar Game Workers Union,' and it will operate as part of IWGB.

The Rockstar Game Workers Union stated, 'This was not the way we had planned to make an official announcement. While this was a blatant union-busting move that resulted in the layoff of 31 members, our union has not been destroyed by these mass layoffs; in fact, it has grown bigger and stronger. Shortly after the layoffs, our union membership rate once again exceeded the 10% threshold. The gaming industry is changing rapidly. Behind every success story are tragedies such as layoffs, burnout, and broken promises. Now we are facing an unprecedented recession. The industry must change, and together we will make it happen.'
