On March 16, 2026, local time, NVIDIA announced DLSS 5 , an AI-powered upscaling technology. However, internet users have been making mocking posts about DLSS 5, claiming that the upscaling caused the appearance of game characters to change too drastically.

It's not just internet users who have a negative view of DLSS 5; some critics have stated that 'DLSS 5 makes games look worse and more uniform, and only reflects NVIDIA's unique aesthetic.'
At NVIDIA's AI conference, NVIDIA GTC 2026 , CEO Huang was asked by technology media outlet Tom's Hardware about the growing backlash against DLSS 5 among internet users.
In response, CEO Huang countered the criticism of DLSS 5 by saying, 'First of all, they are completely wrong. The reason is, as I have explained very carefully, DLSS 5 combines generative AI with the controllability of geometry, textures, and everything related to games.'

In other words, game developers can fine-tune the generation AI to suit their game's style, and while DLSS 5 adds generation capabilities to the game's existing geometry, 'artistic control remains unchanged.' CEO Huang explained this by saying, 'This is not post-processing , not frame-level post-processing, but generation control at the geometry level.'
Furthermore, CEO Huang stated that game developers will be able to decide how they use DLSS 5, and explained that they can even create toon shaders .
Furthermore, CEO Huang stated, 'These are all under the control of the game developers. They can be directly controlled and are completely different from generative AI; they could be called content-controlled generative AI. We call this neural rendering.'
