'GPT-5.3 Instant' is here, reducing ChatGPT's unnecessary preamble and enhancing web search functionality

GPT-5.3 Instant was released on March 3, 2026. This model reduces responses that disrupt the flow of conversation, excessive preambles, and overly assertive expressions.

With the previous generation of GPT-5.2 Instant, users complained that the model sometimes rejected questions that could be answered safely and that responses felt overly cautious or pushy, especially on sensitive topics. GPT-5.3 Instant significantly reduces unnecessary rejections by the model and also suppresses prefaces that could be perceived as overly cautious or preachy.

OpenAI said, 'This update focuses on improving ChatGPT's tone and conversation flow. These are issues that don't necessarily show up in benchmarks and are difficult to measure simply, but they affect whether ChatGPT is perceived as helpful or difficult to use. When it's appropriate to provide a helpful answer, we've improved the model to focus on the intent of the question and provide a direct answer without unnecessary preambles. This reduces stalls and allows the model to provide more directly helpful answers.'

GPT-5.3 Instant improves the quality of answers even when information is sourced from the web, and it now better combines what it finds on the web with the model's own knowledge and reasoning. For example, instead of simply summarizing search results, it also uses the model's own knowledge and understanding to provide context and background to recent news.

Additionally, while previous search results could lead to long lists of links or information that was less relevant, GPT-5.3 Instant de-emphasizes web search results, more accurately capturing the context and intent of the question and presenting important information at the beginning.

Additionally, GPT-5.3 Instant reportedly reduced hallucinations across a wide range of topics compared to previous models, providing more factual answers. Compared to previous models, the hallucination rate was reduced by 26.8% when using the web and by 19.7% when relying solely on internal knowledge.

However, at the time of writing, OpenAI reported that responses in some languages, such as Japanese and Korean, may feel awkward or literal. OpenAI says it continues to focus on improving tone and naturalness in each language.

GPT-5.3 Instant is already available to all ChatGPT users and is available to developers as an API under 'gpt-5.3-chat-latest.' GPT-5.2 Instant will remain available for paid users in the 'Legacy Model' dropdown for three months, after which it will be discontinued on June 3, 2026.

OpenAI also hinted at the arrival of 'GPT-5.4,' saying it will be 'sooner than you think.'
