Automattic adds AI assistant to WordPress.com, allowing users to change site-wide layout and style using natural language commands

Automattic announced the introduction of a built-in AI assistant on WordPress.com on February 17, 2026. This new feature will enable users to directly change the layout and design of their entire website through intuitive commands using natural language, without any specialized coding knowledge.

WordPress' AI assistant is designed to understand and act on your site's content and layout, and can be invoked and used within the editor, media library, or other screens where you're working. Specifically, it can properly interpret even vague instructions like 'Make this section feel more modern and spacious' or 'Change the site's colors to something brighter and bolder,' and apply them to your site in real time.

It also supports a wide range of editing tasks, such as suggesting new fonts, adding a contact page, rewriting existing text to make it more confident, and even translating into multiple languages. It also works with the block notes feature introduced in WordPress 6.9, so by typing '@ai,' you can directly involve AI in your editing workflow and request things like fact-checking and headline suggestions.

On the visual side, Google's image generation AI, Nano Banana, can be used to generate images by specifying aspect ratios and styles using the 'Generate Image' button in the media library, or you can edit existing images.

This AI assistant feature is available for Business or Commerce plan sites to opt in to at no additional cost and will work unless you enable it, but it is automatically enabled on any plan if you purchase a site built with the AI Website Builder.

Automattic is also releasing a number of other new AI-powered tools, including a guide that combines Claude Code, Anthropic's AI coding assistant, with WordPress Studio, a free local development

environment , to create a working plugin in minutes using text prompts, even without deep coding knowledge.

Additionally, the company announced

the Claude Cowork plugin, which allows users to assemble a site in WordPress from a conversation with Claude, generate a complete block theme, and deploy it to a local site in WordPress Studio. The plugin is supported by a set of reusable instructions called 'Skills' that organize site specifications, present design ideas, and generate a block theme that follows WordPress best practices. Skills are described as the next generation of prompts, and are updated frequently, changing on a weekly basis.

Skills can also be used with other AI tools such as ChatGPT, creating an environment where even non-experts can build sophisticated websites through conversation. Tools such as 'Telex,' which allows users to generate and preview blocks for free, have also been introduced, and WordPress.com is positioning AI not just as a supplementary tool, but as a core technology that will transform the website building process itself.
