Waymo provides more than 400,000 rides per week in six major US metropolitan areas. Annually, it has tripled its year-on-year growth to 15 million rides. 'This is not only one of the most advanced examples of AI coming to the physical world, but also a demonstration of the essential services people have come to rely on in their daily lives,' Waymo said.
The company will use the funds to continue expanding globally while maintaining its industry-leading safety standards, with plans to launch new services in at least 20 cities by 2026.
Saurabh Gupta, co-founder of DST Global, who participated in the investment round, said, 'Waymo has brought autonomous driving from science fiction to reality. Compared to human drivers, it has fewer serious accidents and is already saving lives. Beyond 2026, as Waymo scales, it will improve road safety around the world while increasing productivity and accessibility for millions of people. Waymo's autonomous driving will have a profound impact on the way we live and work, including reshaping cities. We are excited to be a part of this future together with (Waymo co-founders) Tekedra Mawakana, Dmitri Dolgov, and the Waymo team.'
In addition to its expansion in the United States, Waymo is also conducting tests in Tokyo in partnership with Nihon Kotsu and others.
