I tried playing 'Yojiwake,' a puzzle game where you have to find five four-character idioms from 20 different kanji characters displayed.

Tokoroten is a puzzle game updated every day at midnight, in which players must find five four-character idioms from 20 different kanji characters displayed on the screen. I actually played it to see what kind of game it was.

'Yojiwake' can be played on a PC or smartphone browser. This time, I tried playing it on a PC browser.

When you access it, the problem of the article creation date is displayed as 'Find today's five four-character idioms,' but first try playing practice questions to understand how to play. Click the 'How to play' icon in the red frame.

Click 'Play the practice questions' at the bottom.

This is the practice question. '5/5' caught my eye right away, so I selected each kanji and clicked 'OK' at the bottom.

If you answer correctly, the four-character idiom and its meaning will be displayed at the top of the screen. Correct four-character idioms will also be colored and grouped together at the top.

The next thing that caught my eye was '100% accuracy,' but I decided to remove one character and make it '100% accuracy,' and clicked 'OK.'

Then, along with the message 'Ninety-nine percent!', which is a four-character idiom that translates to 'Almost right!', the number of characters out of four that you got right was displayed. If you got three out of four characters correct, the kanji included in the correct four-character idiom was surrounded by a blue frame. Also, because you failed to guess the four-character idiom, one remaining life was reduced in the red frame.

This time, select 'Medium' to ensure a perfect result and click 'OK.'

I got the answer right.

If you can't find the four-character idiom even after looking for a while, just click the shuffle button in the red frame.

The arrangement of kanji that have not yet been answered correctly will be swapped, allowing you to think about the problem from a different perspective.

I found 'Seven turns, eight rises,' so I selected each kanji and clicked 'OK.'

I got the answer right without any problems.

If you still can't find the four-character idiom, click the light bulb icon in the red frame.

Then, the meaning of one of the four-character idioms you have not yet found will be displayed as a hint. Please note that you can only use a hint once per game.

Thanks to the hint, I was able to find 'Kill two birds with one stone.' I selected each kanji and clicked 'OK.'

I got the answer right.

There are only four characters left, so select each kanji and click 'OK'.

The clear screen then displayed the five four-character idioms and their meanings. At the top, it said, 'Cleared in 6 moves and 1 mistake!', showing how many attempts it took to clear the game.

The game flow is very simple as shown above. Questions are updated daily, and you can also play questions that have been asked in the past. To play, click on the 'Past Questions' icon in the red frame.

Just click on the date you want to play from here. This time, I tried choosing 'January 20, 2026.'

You can play the questions for the date you selected like this.

According to the creator, Tokoroten, 'Yojiwake' is a four-character idiom based on the rules of the game ' Connections ' published by the New York Times, and was created for Japanese people.

The practice exercises played in the article were made up of only simple four-character idioms, but the exercises updated every day at midnight sometimes included more difficult four-character idioms that had never been seen before, making it a game where you could learn new four-character idioms just by playing.
