The FBI conducted an unannounced raid on the home of Washington Post reporter Hannah Nathanson in the early morning hours of January 14, 2026. The FBI is investigating Aurelio Pérez-Lugones, a former Pentagon contractor accused of accessing and taking classified intelligence reports. The raid appears to have been intended to seize Nathanson's reporting materials as part of that investigation. Investigators reportedly told the Post reporter, 'Nathanson is not the subject of any investigation and is not suspected of any wrongdoing.'
Attorney General Pam Bondi explained in a post on X that 'a raid was conducted at the home of a Washington Post reporter who reported on classified and illegally leaked information from a Department of Defense contractor. The leaker is now incarcerated,' and further stated, 'The Trump Administration will not tolerate reported illegal leaks of classified information that pose a serious risk to our national security and the brave men and women who serve our country.'
This past week, at the request of the Department of War, the Department of Justice and FBI executed a search warrant at the home of a Washington Post journalist who was obtaining and reporting classified and illegally leaked information from a Pentagon contractor. The leaker is…

Nathanson said his smartphone, a smartwatch, and two laptops were seized during the search. The Washington Post condemned the FBI's investigation, calling it a 'highly unusual and aggressive move by law enforcement.'
The afternoon of the raid, Washington Post Editor-in-Chief Matt Murray sent an email to Post staff saying, 'Investigators showed up unannounced, raided our home, and seized electronic devices. This unusual and aggressive behavior is deeply troubling and raises serious questions and concerns about the constitutional protections for our work.'
Press freedom advocates have strongly criticized the investigation. Tim Richardson of PEN America , an organization dedicated to protecting freedom of expression, said, 'The government's aggressive actions, such as this one, represent a growing attack on independent reporting and undermine the First Amendment . This is intended to intimidate sources and undermine journalists' ability to gather news and hold governments accountable. Such actions are more common in authoritarian police states than in democratic societies that recognize the essential role journalism plays in informing the public.' Indeed, President Trump has previously sued several media organizations for 'unfair reporting,' raising concerns that freedom of speech and freedom of the press are being threatened.

Bruce D. Brown, president of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, also strongly criticized the FBI, saying, 'Physical searches of a journalist's equipment, home, and belongings are among the most invasive investigations law enforcement can undertake. The Department of Justice has specific federal laws and policies that reserve such searches for the most extreme cases, when they go far beyond mere investigation, jeopardize classified information, and harm journalism in the public interest generally. Until an official statement from the FBI is made public, we don't know what the government's argument is for overcoming these extremely high hurdles, but this case represents an extraordinary escalation in the administration's violation of the independence of the press.'
