On January 9, 2026, Hank , a Google employee and YouTube developer, announced an update to the filter feature, saying, 'Based on feedback, we've updated the filter feature to provide a more effective and intuitive search experience.'

YouTube is making some significant additions and name changes to its filter sorting options to better align with user expectations. These are the three changes:

・Special content type
We've added a new 'Short Videos' option to the 'Type' menu in our search filters, giving viewers more control over whether they see short or regular videos in their search results, helping them find exactly the content they're looking for, regardless of the format.

・'Preference Settings' menu
The 'Sort' menu has been renamed to 'Preferences.' This improved sort menu is designed to maximize your convenience.

・'Popularity' filter
The 'Views' sorting option has been renamed to 'Popularity.' This filter makes it easier to find popular videos related to your search query. Our system evaluates relevance signals, such as the number of views and watch time of a video, to determine how popular a video is for a particular query.

The new search filters are:

For example, if you search for 'ice cream,' a short video will appear at the top of the search results, as shown below.

To use the search filter, click 'Filter' at the bottom right of the search box and select 'Videos.'

This excluded short videos from the search results.

YouTube explains, 'We're simplifying and reorganizing the filter menu to make it more intuitive and improve the overall search experience. This includes removing some options that weren't working as expected and were causing user complaints.'

In fact, the 'Upload Date - Last Hour' and 'Rating' filters have been removed in this update. However, the 'Upload Date' menu remains, and filters other than the last hour are still available. You can also find popular videos by using the 'Popularity' filter instead of 'Rating.'
