Coursera is a platform that offers a wide range of online courses created by companies and institutions such as Google, Microsoft, and Stanford University.

Udemy is an online course platform similar to Coursera, but its courses are primarily video-based and offer a wide variety of courses, including not only programming and game development but also cooking and presentations.

The two companies announced that they have entered into an agreement to merge on December 17, 2025. The acquisition transaction will be carried out in the form of a stock exchange, with Coursera acquiring all of Udemy's shares. Udemy shareholders will also receive 0.8 Coursera shares for each Udemy share they hold. Following the acquisition announcement, Udemy's shares soared.

After the acquisition is complete, Coursera will own 59% of the shares and Udemy will own 41% of the shares, with the combined company estimated to be valued at $2.5 billion (390 billion yen).

'We are at a critical juncture where AI is rapidly redefining the skills needed for every job in every industry. Organizations and individuals around the world need a platform that is as agile as the new skills they need to master,' said Coursera CEO Greg Hart, highlighting the company's ability to adapt to the AI era. Udemy CEO Hugo Sarrazin added, 'As a combined platform, Udemy and Coursera will accelerate our AI-powered product roadmap, strengthen our go-to-market capabilities and expand our global footprint. We will also create revenue and operational synergies to strengthen our long-term financial position.'
