Allianz Life spokesman Brett Weinberg later confirmed to technology media TechCrunch that the company had suffered a data breach in a cyberattack by hackers. Weinberg explained that a malicious threat actor gained access to Allianz Life's third-party cloud-based CRM system on July 16, 2025. The threat actor then used social engineering to obtain personal information of most of Allianz Life's customers, financial professionals, and employees.
Allianz Life said the data breach affected 1.4 million customers, but parent company Allianz has over 125 million customers worldwide, TechCrunch noted.
Allianz Life said it had notified the FBI about the data breach, and added that it had 'no evidence' that other systems on its network had been compromised.
TechCrunch has asked Allianz Life whether it has received any ransom demands from the hackers, but has not received a response. At the time of writing, Allianz Life had not commented on the involvement of the hacking group.
TechCrunch points out that there have been a number of data breaches targeting the entire insurance industry in the past month. Among the companies affected is Aflac, a major health insurance company. The series of data breaches targeting insurance companies is said to be the work of a hacker group called 'Scattered Spider,' who uses social engineering tactics such as calling insurance company help desks and spoofing them to access corporate networks.
