◆Raspberry Pi 5 with 16GB RAM capacity
The 16GB RAM version of the Raspberry Pi 5 looks like this. The chip configuration and I/O port layout other than the RAM are the same as other models.

The RAM is manufactured by Micron and has '16GB RAM' clearly printed near the RAM. According to the Raspberry Pi development team, 8GB of RAM is sufficient for most use cases of the Raspberry Pi 5, but large amounts of memory may be required when running large language models or performing fluid dynamics calculations. Large amounts of memory may also be required when using Linux distributions such as Ubuntu instead of the Raspberry Pi OS.

The 16GB RAM version of Raspberry Pi 5 will be priced at $120 (approximately 19,000 yen), and will be sold for 22,440 yen including tax by KSY, one of the Japanese distributors.

The editorial department of GIGAZINE has also received the 16GB RAM version of Raspberry Pi 5, so we plan to publish an article comparing its performance with other models soon.

Efforts toward decarbonization
The power consumption of the Raspberry Pi series is 2-3W when idle, and around 10W even under heavy load. This allows for lower carbon dioxide emissions than a typical PC. However, after requesting a survey from a third-party organization called ' Inhabit ,' it was discovered that the manufacturing, shipping, and disposal of the Raspberry Pi 4 and Raspberry Pi 5 emits the equivalent of 6.5kg of carbon dioxide. To compensate for this, Raspberry Pi has started selling 'carbon removal credits.'

These carbon removal credits can be purchased for an additional fee starting at $4 when purchasing a Raspberry Pi.

The proceeds from the carbon removal credits will be paid to UNDO , a company developing carbon dioxide removal technology. UNDO has developed a technology called 'enhanced rock weathering,' which crushes rocks to increase the surface area exposed to air and increase the amount of carbon dioxide captured. By purchasing Raspberry Pi carbon removal credits, you can contribute to the capture of an amount of carbon dioxide equivalent to the carbon dioxide emissions associated with the manufacture, shipping, and disposal of Raspberry Pi.
