On January 1, 2025 local time, a Tesla Cybertruck exploded in front of the Trump International Hotel Las Vegas. It was revealed that the Cybertruck was being driven by decorated Green Beret Liberberger, who had shot himself in the head and committed suicide just before the explosion. There was no damage to the building.

According to the Las Vegas Police Department, which was investigating the case, Libersberger used ChatGPT, an OpenAI chatbot, to plan his attacks. Libersberger used ChatGPT to research attack plans, such as 'targets for bombings,' 'the flight speed of certain bullets,' and 'whether fireworks are legal in Arizona.'

Las Vegas Police Sheriff Kevin McMahill described the use of generative AI in criminal activity as a 'game changer' and said the Las Vegas Police Department is sharing the information with other law enforcement agencies. 'This is the first known instance in the United States of an individual using ChatGPT to set up a specific device. This is a worrying moment,' he said.

OpenAI told the Associated Press in a statement, 'In this case, ChatGPT responded with information already publicly available on the Internet and provided warnings against harmful or illegal activity. OpenAI is also working with law enforcement to assist in the investigation.'

At the time of the crime, Libersberger's Cybertruck was loaded with 60 pounds (27 kg) of pyrotechnics and 70 pounds (32 kg) of shrapnel, but investigators have yet to determine the exact cause of the explosion. Libersberger is said to have planned a bomb attack that would cause much more damage, but the Cybertruck absorbed most of the impact of the explosion, resulting in only minor damage.

In addition, Libersberger believed that he was being pursued by the police and kept a diary titled 'Surveillance.' However, Sheriff McMahill said that Libersberger had no criminal history and there was no record of the police department or the FBI pursuing a suspect.

It has also been revealed that Libersberger was considering carrying out the bombing at the Grand Canyon Skywalk in Arizona. Las Vegas Police Deputy Sheriff Dori Coren said at a press conference that he did not know why the suspect changed the location of the bombing. The diary also revealed that the suspect was worried about being 'considered a terrorist' and 'being thought to be trying to kill other people.'

Liberberger wrote in a note that the bombing was 'a design to serve as a wake-up call to the nation's suffering,' specifically addressing domestic and international issues, including political discontent, social problems, and the war in Ukraine. He also wrote in a note on his cell phone that he 'needs to remember with all my heart the brothers I lost and to be freed from the burden of the lives I have taken.'

Because Liberberger carried out the bombing in front of the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, investigators are trying to determine whether he was trying to make a political statement, but investigators say he did not harbor any ill will toward President-elect Donald Trump, and that a note he left behind said, 'The country needs to rally around me and Tesla's Elon Musk.'
