Is there still any point in using screensavers?

A screensaver is a function that displays an animation when a PC is not operated for a certain period of time. Windows and Macs come with a screensaver as standard, and many Linux distributions also provide screensavers, but their usage rate is low. Nevertheless, journalist

Screensavers were originally developed to protect cathode ray tube displays, which suffer from a problem called

burn-in , where the same content remains on the screen if it is displayed for a long period of time.

Mild burn-in was merely an annoyance until you replaced your display, but severe burn-in could render the display unusable.

Old TVs were also cathode ray tubes, but in the case of TVs, the content displayed was constantly changing, so burn-in did not occur. On the other hand, with a PC, if a user leaves the PC with a document or image open, the same content continues to be displayed, causing burn-in. Therefore, if there is no operation for a certain period of time, a screensaver animation is displayed, changing the screen display to prevent burn-in.

LCD displays do not suffer from burn-in even if the same content is continuously displayed, and even if the display is affected, it can be repaired by displaying a blank screen. OLED displays do suffer from burn-in, but in today's world where displays can easily be put into sleep mode, the functional benefits of a screensaver have been lost. Other uses include preventing others from looking at the screen while you are away from your desk, or requiring you to log in when returning to ensure security, but in any case, there is no need to go to the trouble of displaying a screensaver animation, and simply putting the display into sleep mode is more eco-friendly as it uses less power.

Popular Science cited reasons for continuing to use screensavers as 'the joy of coming back to your PC with high-definition nature footage, green Matrix code, or lots of bubbles,' and suggested practical uses, such as 'displaying a clock so you can check the time from a distance' or 'setting

Folding@Home as your screensaver to contribute to scientific progress while you're away from your desk.'
