Built on Gemini 2.0, which Google also announced today, Jules is a code agent that integrates directly with GitHub's workflow system to analyze complex codebases, make fixes across multiple files, and prepare detailed pull requests without the need for constant human oversight.
VentureBeat, an IT news site, described Jules as 'an AI coding assistant that can automatically fix software bugs and prepare code changes while developers sleep.'
In October 2024, Google CEO Sundar Pichai revealed that more than a quarter of the company's new code is generated by AI, indicating that AI is already highly integrated into Google's development processes.
According to market research firm Gartner, AI-assisted coding is predicted to be used in 75% of new application development by 2028. With the software development industry struggling with chronic talent shortages and mounting technical debt, automated coding assistants are becoming increasingly important.
Gemini 2.0 and Jules, which were announced in this context, will compete in the programming assistance field with AI coding tools such as Microsoft's GitHub Copilot and Cursor, as well as generative AI with advanced coding capabilities such as Claude and ChatGPT.
Google said, 'Jules handles bug fixes and other time-consuming tasks so you can focus on what you want to build. This work is part of Google's long-term goal to build AI agents that help in all domains, including coding.'
Jules is being released to a 'select group of trusted testers' starting December 11, 2024, and will be made available to other interested developers in early 2025.
