It all started on October 18, 2024, when Greg Krow-Hartman proposed a change to remove several Linux kernel maintainers from the MAINTAINERS file due to 'various compliance requirements.' Many of the maintainers who were removed had Russian email addresses or were suspected of having ties to Russia.
This sudden change sparked a lot of discussion within the community, with affected maintainers expressing surprise and some even proposing patches to reverse the change, especially as the specifics of the 'compliance requirements' were not made public.
In response to this situation, on October 23, 2024, Torvalds declared, 'We have seen a lot of Russian trolls. The reasons for the changes are clear and will not be reversed.'
'For the innocent bystanders, the compliance requirements at issue are not just American,' Torvalds said. 'If you don't already know about the Russian sanctions, read the news. And by 'news' I don't mean Russian state-sponsored spam. If you send me a patch asking for a reversal, please use your brain. I'm Finnish. You think I 'support' Russian aggression? You seem not only ignorant of real news, but of history as well.'
