The iPhone 15 series released in 2023 will have 6GB of RAM for the iPhone 15/15 Plus and 8GB of RAM for the iPhone 15 Pro/15 Pro Max. At the time of writing, the only iPhones equipped with 8GB or more of RAM are the iPhone 15 Pro/15 Pro Max, and only the iPhone 15 Pro/15 Pro Max can run the personal AI Apple Intelligence, so it has been pointed out that 8GB or more of RAM may be required to run Apple Intelligence.

The iPhone 16 series, which was just announced in September 2024, did not reveal how many GB of RAM each model would have during the launch event. However, it was revealed in an interview with Srouji by technology YouTube channel Geekerwan that all models will be equipped with 8GB of RAM.

Regarding the fact that all iPhone 16 models come with 8GB of RAM, Srouji said, 'Our goal is to build the best products and provide the best user experience. In relation to Apple Intelligence, DRAM is one aspect. When you look at what we're building, whether it's silicon, hardware or software, we want to be lean in a lot of ways. We have a ton of data that tells us how to enable certain features, and Apple Intelligence is one of the very important features that we want to enable. We look at different configurations of both compute and memory bandwidth, memory capacity, and then we make the tradeoffs and balances that actually make the most sense. So Apple Intelligence is a very important piece of the puzzle. Intelligence was the main feature that made us think we needed to go for 8GB of RAM. But 8GB of RAM is also very useful for other applications, like gaming, high-end gaming, AAA title gaming, high-end gaming on the device. So I think it will be a very beneficial upgrade for users. 'Another thing to remember is that one of the benefits of having software, silicon and products fully integrated is that our great software team not only optimizes the compute, but also optimizes the memory footprint for each application. So you're not wasting memory. We looked at all these tradeoffs and ultimately decided that 8GB of RAM was the most perfect choice for us,' he said.

When asked why Apple silicon has not focused on increasing the number of cores compared to other products in the industry, Srouji said, 'If you look at the single-threaded performance of our silicon as a whole, we have the absolute best scores in the industry. We are leading the industry, and this is also true in the performance of our efficiency cores.' 'And when we consider the configuration of silicon that goes into the iPhone, iPad, and Mac, we use a lot of simulation and performance modeling tools to look at the actual data. For example, we consider the battery size of the product, the power delivery system of the product, the thermal envelope of the product, etc. The reason for this is that over-building creates waste. For example, for a smartphone, we came to the conclusion that two performance cores and four efficiency cores meet the requirements for that device. This is because our silicon has the best single-threaded performance, and the efficiency cores are very good for other tasks, and that configuration works.'

The interview also touches on the improved camera performance of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro.
