Microsoft owns various game makers, including Activision Blizzard, and all of these companies are managed by Microsoft Gaming , Microsoft's gaming division. On September 12, 2024, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer announced in an email sent to employees that the company would cut about 650 jobs.

The overseas media outlet IGN obtained and published the email that Spencer sent to employees, which reads as follows:

'Over the past year, our goal has been to welcome Activision Blizzard and enable them to do what they do best with minimal disruption. As we align our team structure and manage the business following the acquisition, we have made the decision to lay off approximately 650 people across Microsoft Gaming, primarily in corporate and support roles, as we position the business for long-term success.

We find this difficult to accept. We deeply appreciate the contributions of affected employees and are supporting them with severance packages that include severance pay, medical care and outplacement services.

These organizational changes position our corporate and support teams and resources to better support the needs of our studio teams and business units, aligning them for future sustainable growth. As part of running our business, we manage the lifecycle and performance of our games, which will impact several teams. Please note that we are not planning to cancel any games, devices or user experiences or close any studios as a result of these organizational changes.

We have had some great moments and some difficult moments along the way. This is one of those difficult moments. We know it can be hard to go through so many changes, but we can all come together and show care and kindness to one another and make an effort. Thank you for your support and the compassion and respect you show each other as we navigate these changes.

This follows Microsoft's cuts of around 1,900 jobs in January 2024.
