An engineer who won the contest and conducted a detailed analysis reveals his analysis method

When engineer and filmmaker Dave Kiss won the $2,750 prize in a promotional contest, he wrote a blog post about how he analyzed the contest and won the victory.

Kiss said he doesn't usually have any interest in online contests, but he was intrigued by the promotional contest for WD-40, a rust-prevention lubricant spray, because in many ways it seemed like an easy thing to win.

The WD-40 contest had a published score breakdown, which said that 25 points were awarded for 'video format,' with only 10 points allocated to 'content quality.' Since many of the submissions were in the form of photos, Kiss thought he might have an easier time winning if he created video content.

In addition, there were 29 prizes up for grabs, so even if you didn't win first place, you had a pretty good chance of winning something. Furthermore, it was possible for one person to submit multiple works and win multiple awards.

At the time of his confirmation, a total of 538 works had already been posted. Kiss used a tool called Playwright to scrape the work pages to find 'real competitors' from among the 538.

The works were presented in the form of 'videos' and 'photos,' as well as 'steps,' which described the steps of the restoration work carried out in the project.

Of the 538 works, 439 were in 'image' format.

In other words, there are only 99 real competitors.

Kiss then visually inspected the works and weeded out any that were too low quality. At this point, there were only 76 works left in the running, meaning that anyone who submitted a work had a 1 in 77 chance of winning the $5,000 prize.

Since multiple works can be submitted in this contest, Kiss asked the chat AI

GPT-4o to calculate the 'probability of winning for each number of submitted works.'

After some consideration, Kiss realized that submitting eight works would give him a greater than 95% chance of winning at least one award, so he decided to submit eight works.

Kiss said he completed all of his works according to the following format:

1: Present the problem to be solved
2. Demonstrate that problems can be solved with WD-40 and basic tools
3: Detailed steps to resolve issues
4: Display the results of solving the problem

Of the eight submissions submitted to the contest, five were awarded fourth place, and one each in fifth and sixth place, meaning that the team was awarded $2,750 in gift cards.
