The White House announced on August 12, 2024 local time that it will propose ways to make it easier for Americans to cancel their subscriptions and memberships, citing the time and effort it takes to cancel them.

The FTC has proposed rules for public comment that would require companies to make it as easy to cancel subscriptions as it is to sign up for them.

The FCC has also begun investigating whether to apply similar requirements to the telecommunications industry.

The Department of Transportation's 'automatic refund rule' requires airlines to refund fares when flights are canceled or significantly changed for any reason. Refunds must be made in full, in the form they were paid for, and no alternatives such as flight credits are allowed.

These initiatives are part of the Biden administration's 'Time Is Money' initiative, which includes improvements to customer service, such as the ability to renew passports online and automatic health insurance renewals, which have saved more than 2 million hours of processing time.

ABC News reported that administration officials said the measures could take weeks or months to implement.
