The NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), the highest level of college football in the United States, has about six times as many players as the NFL , the professional American football league. In addition, in college football, there are players who become professionals and new students, so the player roster is frequently changed until the end of spring.

'EA SPORTS College Football 25,' a game themed on college football, was released on July 19, 2024. The game features more than 10,000 players, and the Wall Street Journal has revealed that EA used AI to scan player photos to create 3D models of each player.

EA is collecting bust-up photos of FBS college football players and using AI to create in-game 3D models in just a few seconds. This technology is different from image-generating AI like OpenAI's DALL-E, in that it takes data from photos and creates a full 3D avatar.

If an artist does not like the quality of the 3D model created by the AI, the artist can make adjustments and provide feedback to the AI. Through this feedback, the AI can improve the accuracy of the 3D model generation.

The 3D models of the players that appear in 'EA SPORTS College Football 25' are not as detailed as those in the NFL-themed ' Madden NFL 25 ,' but this is the first time that EA has implemented 3D models that resemble college football players in the series.

The reason is that the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has prohibited college athletes from earning revenue from their names, photos, and likeness rights in college sports. However, in 2021, the NCAA announced a new policy that recognizes the image rights of athletes, allowing players' names and other information to be used in the game.

Cam Weber, president of EA Sports, EA's sports game division, said, 'The NCAA rule change was bold.' However, if human artists had to manually create 3D models of each player, it would be impossible to implement 3D models of each player in FBS, where player rosters change frequently. Weber said, 'We couldn't implement 3D models of players with the previous workflow,' and emphasized that 'EA SPORTS College Football 25' was made possible by using AI.

According to EA, the 134 college football stadiums featured in the game were created using a different technology developed in-house, which allowed them to recreate the unique structures of each university's stadium, such as Notre Dame's ' Touchdown Jesus' and Arkansas State's waterfall .
