At the time of writing, Siri can only use limited functions based on two types of ' Siri Intent ' and ' Siri Shortcuts .' In contrast, the new Siri has more extensive knowledge and control over the internal operation of apps, and will be able to use app functions more flexibly and freely through Siri.

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, a regular leaker of Apple-related information, iOS 18's upgraded Siri will be able to open individual documents, move notes to different folders, send or delete emails, open specific publications in Apple News, email web links, and have the device summarize articles for you.

Although Siri's app functions will initially be limited to Apple's own apps, it is expected that hundreds of different commands will be supported in the future.

This is expected to significantly reduce the number of situations where you ask Siri to do a task but it doesn't work properly. As a smarter Siri will be able to respond to a wider range of natural language commands, 9to5Mac pointed out that 'this may be the ideal Siri we've always hoped for but never got to realize.'

Gurman also mentioned Siri features that are not yet ready for the release of iOS 18. 'The new Siri will only process one command at a time, but Apple plans to let users chain commands together. For example, you could ask Siri to summarize a recorded meeting and text it to a colleague with one request. You could also theoretically ask your iPhone to crop a photo and email it to a friend,' he said, pointing out the possibility that multiple commands could be executed.

9to5Mac pointed out that 'multiple command support is a feature that users have long expected from Siri, but Apple has been unable to deliver until now. The transition to a large language model (LLM)-based Siri should enable Siri to deliver many of the features that users expect from a modern digital assistant.'
