Regarding CEO Altman, OpenAI's official blog published on November 17, 2023, stated, 'We have concluded that communication with the Board has been inconsistent and indirect, impeding the Board's ability to fulfill its responsibilities. The Board can no longer trust Mr. Altman's ability to lead OpenAI,' and there was a commotion surrounding the dismissal of CEO Altman. As a result, Mr. Altman has left OpenAI.

In response to Altman's sudden resignation, 90% of OpenAI's employees demanded that Sam Altman return and that all directors resign , threatening to move to a new company if their demands were not met. On November 30, 2023, OpenAI announced that Altman would return as CEO, Mira Murati would return as CTO, and Greg Brockman would return as president.

With Altman's return, it has been reported that three of the four members of the board of directors, OpenAI co-founder Ilya Satskever, Quora CEO D'Angelo, entrepreneur Tasha McCauley, and Helen Toner, director of strategy at the Georgetown University Center for Security and Emerging Technology, have been removed from the board. Satskever, who is said to have led the dismissal of CEO Altman, left OpenAI in May 2024.

Appearing on the podcast ' The TED AI Show ' in May 2024, Tonner said, 'On multiple occasions, Altman provided inaccurate information about the formal safety processes the company had in place, making it difficult for the board at the time to know how well the company's AI product safety processes were working or what changes needed to be made.'

Toner further stated, 'When ChatGPT was released in November 2022, the board had no prior notice to the announcement and learned about ChatGPT through Twitter (now X).'



Toner then reported on the factors that led to Altman's dismissal, saying, 'These events continued for years, leading the board members at the time to conclude that Mr. Altman's words to us could not be trusted.'

On the other hand, Brett Taylor, chairman of the OpenAI board of directors at the time of writing, said, 'We are disappointed that Toner is still raising this issue,' and 'The board's decision was not based on any concerns about the safety or security of our products, our pace of development, OpenAI's finances, our investors, our customers or our business partners.' He added, 'OpenAI remains focused on our mission to ensure that general artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity.'
