In a statement posted on its website, SMG declared that it prohibits and rejects any text data mining, scraping, duplication, extraction or use of content owned or controlled by Sony Music Entertainment (SME) or Sony Music Publishing (SMP) unless expressly permitted by either company.

The content in question is 'all' data, including music, lyrics, artwork, metadata, etc. SMG emphasized that the total ban on access to this content specifically extends to 'the training, development, or commercialization of any AI system.'

The declaration is described as 'reaffirming existing legal rights.'

At the same time as the announcement on its website, SMG also reportedly sent letters to more than 700 companies in the AI field. According to the report, the letters stated that 'your companies may be misusing SMG content' and 'we refuse to allow SMG-owned content to be used for AI training.'

In addition, the letter also states, 'We request that you assure us that your affiliates are not engaging in similar misuse and provide information about your access to SMG-owned content,' with a deadline of late May 2024. In addition, the letter also includes an invitation to a discussion about ethical and responsible AI development.

'SMG has embraced the potential for responsibly created AI, used as a creative tool, to revolutionize the way artists make music. We support artists and songwriters in leading the way in embracing new technology, but before any such revolution can take place, we must first ensure that artists' rights are respected,' SMG said in a statement on its website.
