The risk of illness may increase just by touching clothes soaked with cigarette smoke

Passive smoking , in which second- hand smoke is inhaled by smoking, is known to harm non-smokers. ・Inhalation of 'smoke ' is also regarded as a problem. A new study shows that third-hand smoke increases the risk of diseases such as dermatitis if it gets on your skin.

Third-hand smoke refers to inhaling harmful substances, including nicotine derived from cigarettes, that remain on clothes, walls of rooms, furniture, bodies, etc., and inhaling these harmful substances. In recent years, attention has been focused on the harm caused by third-hand smoke, with research results showing that third-hand smoke remains on clothes for more than a year, and third-hand smoke spreads and stays in the air again. Research results have also been reported.

Mr. Shane Sakamaki-Ching, who was enrolled in a doctoral course at the University of California, Riverside, focused on the 'skin', which is the main route when third-hand smoke is taken into the human body, and turned human skin into third-hand smoke. I did an experiment to expose it.

The 10 subjects who participated in the experiment ranged in age from 22 to 45 years old and were healthy nonsmokers. Subjects wore clothes impregnated with Third Hand Smoke or clean clothes for 3 hours during 2 testing sessions, 20-30 days apart, during which time they exercised on

a treadmill for approximately 15 minutes. Exercise on the treadmill was intended to induce perspiration and promote the uptake of third hand smoke particles. Subjects were not told whether the clothing they were wearing was clean or had third-hand smoke on it.

The research team collected blood and urine samples from the subjects 10 hours before the experiment, 3 hours after the experiment, 8 hours after the experiment, when they woke up the next morning, and 22 hours later, and analyzed biomarkers such as protein and oxidative stress. We investigated the difference between wearing third-hand smoked clothes and clean clothes.

Analysis revealed that wearing third-hand smoke-soaked clothing increased biomarkers such as oxidative damage to DNA and blood proteins for up to 22 hours after the experiment. Although the subjects did not show any changes in their skin or health, these biomarkers are related to contact dermatitis and psoriasis , Sakamaki-Ching said, ``This is third-hand smoke. It supports the notion that dermal exposure to phlegm leads to the molecular initiation of inflammation-induced skin disease.'

'There is a general lack of knowledge about the effects of third-hand smoke on human health,' said Prue Talbot , co-author of the paper and professor of cell biology at the University of California, Riverside. When you buy a used car, you take some health risks, and if you go to a casino that allows smoking, you're exposing your skin to third-hand smoke. It's the same as staying overnight,' he commented.

The results of this study will help make people aware of the risks of third-hand smoke. In the future, the research team plans to study large populations exposed to third-hand smoke for a longer period of time, and also plans to study e-cigarette residues.

Sakamaki-Ching said, 'The findings will help physicians in diagnosing patients exposed to third-hand smoke and in developing regulatory policies for remediation of third-hand smoke-contaminated indoor environments.' said.
