The accident occurred at Google's data center in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Council Bluffs is located on the western edge of Iowa, with Omaha, the largest city in Nebraska, on the west side of the Missouri River.


The accident occurred around 11:59 on August 8, 2022 local time (1:59 on August 9, Japan time). According to local police, an arc flash (electrical explosion) occurred when three electricians were working at a substation near the data center building. Three people suffered burns, one was taken by helicopter and two by ambulance to the hospital. Regarding the degree of symptoms, there are reports that all three people suffered severe burns, and reports that only one person suffered severe burns, and there is a discrepancy.
