Probably the first and last precious environmental sounds of 'the quiet cities of the world' are being collected and released by the recording house

Our everyday lives are usually full of car running sounds, airplane flying sounds, electronic announcements, etc., but cities that were locked down due to the effect of the new coronavirus infection (COVID-19), It is quiet like no other. Valuable “maybe the quietest environmental sounds of the city”, which may be the first and the last in decades, have been collected and made public by recorders around the world. The sounds of bells, artificial announcements, and the squealing of birds that occasionally echo in a town where there is no sign of imagination make us feel like a post-apocalyptic world, and somehow calm down.

According to Matt Mikkelsen, a 'recorder' who collects and records 'sound' around the world for movies, TV, games, apps, and radio, collects 'sounds of nature' in an industrialized world. It is very difficult, if not impossible. For example, even if you try to record the sound of the wind and the rustling of trees at the Olympic National Park in Washington, USA, you will not be able to record for a long time because the airplane will fly overhead every 15 to 20 minutes.

However, COVID-19 has reduced the number of people's activities, prevented planes from flying, and caused lockdowns, resulting in unprecedented 'quietness' in the town. When Mikkelsen went on a hike, he heard that every 10 minutes, he could only hear the airplane sound only twice in three hours.

Mikkelsen, who realized that 'environmental sounds are changing all over the world', carried out a project to contact the recording houses around the world and record the changes in the environmental sounds of the city. The 'probably the first and last quiet ambient sound' of a normally busy city was recorded. Mikkelsen says, “Try this unique experience through your headphones,” and published some collected environmental sounds.

Below are some of the environmental sounds collected around the world.

Covent Garden (UK / London)
