The research team of Celine Better et al., Who is studying integrated physiology at the University of Colorado, Boulder, investigated the risks of inappropriate sleep time on health. The research team consists of 461,000 volunteers with a history of heart attacks out of approximately 500,000 volunteers aged 40 to 69 registered with the UK Biobank. We tracked the sleeping habits as reported and analyzed the data along with genetic information.

As a result, we found that people who had an average sleep time of less than 6 hours had a 20% higher risk of having a heart attack than those who had sleep time of 6-9 hours. Also, those who slept more than 9 hours were 34% more likely to have a heart attack than those who slept 6-9 hours.

This trend was more pronounced the longer the sleep time was from the appropriate range. For example, compared to subjects with 7-8 hours of sleep, subjects with only 5 hours of sleep had a 52% increased risk of developing a heart attack. Furthermore, it seems that the risk of onset increased by about 100% for subjects whose sleep time was more than 10 hours.

The research team said, “Some studies have pointed out that lack of sleep can damage the inner wall of the arteries and affect the growth of inflammatory cells in the bone marrow. It may promote inflammation of the body, 'he said, saying that too long sleep poses the same health risks as lack of sleep.
