Linear Labs motors with the same size as existing motors, with twice the torque density and three times the output density

Fort Worth, Texas-based startup “Linear Labs” develops a motor with a “Hunstable Electric Turbine (HET)” that can generate 2 to 5 times the torque of the same size as an existing motor doing. Linear Labs' HET-equipped motors can be downsized with the same performance as existing motors, and are expected to be used in electric vehicles, micromobility, robotics, and air conditioning systems.

Linear Labs has been in business for four years. The name 'Hanstable', named after the electric turbine, is taken from the surnames of the founders Brad Hanstable and Fred Hanstable.

Brad is originally Ustream's CEO, but since selling Ustream to IBM for $ 150 million in 2016, he has focused on Linear Labs.

“This is a big result from electric motors, replacing other commercial electric propulsion units,” acclaimed Dr. Badak Fahimi, who studies reusable energy and vehicle technology at the University of Texas.

“We have a“ holy grail ”of electric motors with high torque and no gearbox,” says Henrik Christensen, author of the American robot technology roadmap and presidential adviser.

Linear Labs motors greatly improve motor efficiency during operation. Motor efficiency is the ratio of machine output to input power. The difference between Linear Labs motors and other motors decreases as the number of revolutions increases, but at 500

rpm , the conventional motor efficiency is about 70%. The Linear Labs motor is about 85%.

Compared to the market-leading motors using high-performance permanent magnets, Linear Labs motors have twice the torque density and three times the output density.

In addition, Segway said that the cruising range was extended by 50%, the torque was quadrupled, the maximum speed was improved, and the steep slope that could not be climbed has been raised.

According to Fred, micromobility with Linear Labs air-cooled motors will be available within a year.
