There are not many teaching materials for teaching Braille to children, and teachers sometimes handcraft teaching materials. Under these circumstances, LEGO has announced the start of a project where you can learn braille using Lego blocks. A set called 'LEGO Braille Bricks' will be distributed free of charge to visually impaired children.

This is LEGO Braille Bricks. Under the braille indicated by 2 columns x 3 lines, alphabets and numbers corresponding to the braille are written. Such characters are not written in normal braille, but it is easy to learn even for the sighted people because of the written characters.

LEGO Braille Bricks has been tested in countries such as Brazil, Denmark, Norway and the United Kingdom, as languages vary by country. You can see below how children actually use LEGO Braille Bricks.

Glue the block to the gray base like this and complete the word.

The block has a colorful color to stimulate interest in the sighted people. There is no relationship between letters and colors.

One set contains as many as 250 blocks, so there are 50 blocks each of red, green, white, blue and orange.

Feedback after the test seems to be positive, but there were also negative ones. For example, Braille is originally read by moving a finger horizontally, but Lego blocks are designed to read Braille by vertical movement. In this regard, the Lego Foundation responded that LEGO Braille Bricks was intended for people who started to learn Braille, not for reading long sentences. With the development of technologies such as tablets and apps, children are no longer interested in learning braille, so LEGO Braille Bricks is positioned as a creative tool to turn children's interests into Braille once more You are

Also, because LEGO Braille Bricks are in the form of blocks, they can be turned upside down. In order to solve this problem, the development team initially thought about embossing the letters and creating a groove that allows them to see the top and bottom, but changing the design that has already been modified from the original Lego block, more than necessary It was concluded that it should not be done. Therefore, the solution is achieved by designing that the upper part of the block is braille and the lower part is not struck.

Braille typewriters can not be corrected later if the typed one is incorrect. However, LEGO Braille Bricks can be easily recombined, making it a very “educational” tool. Because the element of 'play' is also large, children can learn while demonstrating their creativeness.

Basically, LEGO Braille Bricks will be distributed free of charge to visually impaired people, but demand from LEGO block fans is also expected. It is undecided at the time of article creation whether it will be sold on a commercial basis, but the possibility is not completely excluded.

Because different studs are placed from the regular Lego block, Lego says that 63 new types had to be prepared. This was made possible with funding from the Lego Foundation.

It looks like this from the back of LEGO Braille Bricks. However, because the number of studs is smaller than the 2x4 array of ordinary Lego blocks, adhesion between the blocks seems to be weak.

The LEGO Braille Bricks will be released in the late 2020.
