Google street view car equipped with a sensor that measures 'air quality', pollution degree of each section can be mapped

We collaborated with Aclima to develop next generation environmental sensors and announced plans to install a sensor to detect air quality in Google street view cars. First of all, we plan to install a sensor in 50 street view cars, which means that we can visualize the quality of air for each section.

The research content that Google and Aclima has done over the past four years can be seen from the following movie.

It is said that 95% of the world population is living by smoking dirty air, but I did not know how the contaminated air affected people in detail. In order to get more data, "Google can not control things that can not be measured", Google and Aclima kept running in California in the Google Street view car with Aclima's sensors for the past four years.

Mileage extends to approximately 100,000 miles (approximately 160,000 kilometers).

I put it in a car.

By installing the device in the car and running, you can record the air quality every second. The sensor detects carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, nitrogen monoxide, ozone, PM 2.5 and associates with the location information of the street viewer .

You can use data to map air quality with high resolution. On the map below, the closer to yellow, the higher the concentration of pollutants is, so you can see that there is a big difference in air quality in one city.

"One street has both the best quality and the lowest quality," says Davida Herzl, CEO of Aclima. From this discovery, it was thought that it was necessary to map the quality of air.

It was a test period so far, but since the beginning of September 2018 the plan has been announced to expand the scale and to install air measurement equipment in the street view cars around the world.

The collected data will be made public and available to various people regardless of personal, research institution or government.

First of all, from the fall of 2018 Aclima's system will be installed in 50 street view cars mainly in the West and Europe.
