◆ What is Ryzen 5
The "Ryzen 7" series is 8 cores / 16 threads, whereas the "Ryzen 5" series has a lineup of models with 4 cores / 8 threads, including 16 cores of 6 cores / 12 threads. As you can see from the naming "Ryzen 5", Intel's Core i 5 series are rivals. However, since Intel Core i 5 is 4 cores / 4 threads, Ryzen 5 has a great advantage in terms of specifications, and it also has the largest volume CPU with the range of Core i 7 for mainstream such as Skylake and Kaby Lake as the range It is more accurate to say that products targeting the market. AMD, which succeeded in cutting in the high-end market with Ryzen 7, is Ryzen 5 that tried to cut off the mainstream market dominated by Intel. Incidentally, as with Ryzen 7, Ryzen 5 does not have magnification locking, and overclocking is possible with all CPUs.

The Ryzen series CPU consists of "Core Complex (CCX)" which is a shared L3 cache with four cores combined, and the latency (delay) increases as it crosses CCX. The Ryzen 7 of the 8 cores and the Ryzen 5 of the 6 cores are also equipped with two CCXs, and in the case of 6 cores, 2 cores out of the 8 cores are invalidated.

The figure below shows the power consumption of each core of 1600X composed of 3 core + 3 core CCX. In the XFR state in which only one core is OC, 22.54 W and 22.91 W in total including the remaining 5 cores, 20.78 W and 20.67 W in 2 core full load XFR, including the remaining 4 cores total 41.91 W. If 3 cores or more are loaded fully, XFR will not work, and when 6 cores / 12 threads are used up it will be about 60 W.

Two kinds of AMD genuine CPU cooler "Wraith Spire" and "Wraith Stealth" are attached to Ryzen 5 series according to TDP respectively. By the way, unlike the Wraith Spire that comes with the Ryzen 7 1700, the Ryzen 5 CPU cooler does not have a ring shaped LED.

Ryzen series has memory limitations. Currently supported memory is 2667 MHz with 2 inserts for single rank memory, up to 2133 MHz with 4 inserts, 2400 MHz with 2 inserts for dual rank memory, up to 1886 MHz with 4 inserts. Both ECC and non-ECC memory are supported.

The power consumption when loading each CPU of Ryzen 5, Core i 5 is as follows. There seems to be a little step in Core i 5 for power saving performance.

◆ Comparison with Core i5
For comparison of Ryzen 5 1600 X, Core i 5-7600 K is chosen. The price is roughly equivalent to Ryzen 5 1600X for 249 dollars (about 27,300 yen), Core i 5-7600 K for $ 242 (about 26,500 yen). From the pricing it is clear that AMD stands for i5-7600K for virtual enemies with 1600 X.

Ryzen 5 1500X rivals are Core i 5-7500.1600X, 1500X slightly Ryzen 5 is more expensive than Core i5 It may be said that AMD's self-confidence appeared.

◆ Benchmark test
For benchmarking, the motherboard is ASUS "Crosshair VI Hero", the CPU cooler is Nocture "NH-U12S SE-AM 4", the power supply is Corsair "AX 860i", the memory is Corsair "Vengeance DDR4-3000 C15 8 GB" × 2 The graphics boards are GTX1080, GTX1060, R9 Fury, RX480, RX460 and other five typical models of NVIDIA and AMD, storage is Crucial MX 200 (1 TB), OS is Windows 10 Pro 64 bit. By the way, AnandTech implements completely scripted CPU benchmark software, and it is an environment that can measure various benchmarks with one button click.

AnandTech uses various benchmark software to compare Ryzen 5 versus Core i5. It seems that it took about 8 to 10 hours to produce about 100 data points using a script. Below is a selection of some of them, which should give you an approximate trend on the performance of Ryzen 5. The red graph shows Ryzen 5 1600X and 1500X.
