Compute Card announced by Intel is a device which can operate as a single computer by incorporating a processor, GPU, memory, storage, Wi-Fi / Bluetooth function into a plate-like body. A USB-C derivative standard "USB-C plus extension" is used for interfacing with peripheral devices. Because the body is too thin to mount conventional ports, it seems that a unique connector will be used.

The size is 55 × 95 mm, and the thickness is about 5 mm. It is almost the same size as a general credit card, but it seems to be thought that it is the size feeling of the same size as the slot type wireless LAN card which was used often in the past such as a notebook PC in the past.

Although it is an anxious specification, at the time of announcement at CES 2017, detailed specifications are not announced. However, it seems that the installed processor will be the Intel's 7th generation processor "Kaby Lake" series, and it will be expected to have high processing capability if it comes to high-end type. By the way, the maximum TDP is 6 watts.

The intended use is not for consumers but for use in standalone equipment such as industrial equipment, vending machines, outdoor advertisements, etc. The advantage of making it a card type is that it is easy to update the hardware after all. Even if the processing capability of the computer becomes obsolete, updating the latest processing capability simply by replacing the Compute Card, which is the brain part, is a major advantage in considering the life span of installed equipment.

What Compute Card is looking into is that it will be hardware to realize "IoT" where all things are connected to the Internet. It is almost certain that the corresponding OS will be Windows and Linux by using x86 based CPU.

Intel, which announced the Compute Card at CES 2017, intends to announce detailed specifications and prices in June 2017, and announces that shipping will begin in mid-2017 in the future. In addition, development partners such as HP, DELL, Lenovo, Sharp etc will be announcing individually.

The stick type PC "Compute Stick" announced by Intel has already been decided to disappear from Intel's product roadmap in 2018 as well.
