Microsoft's liquid crystal integrated PC "Surface Studio" has been disassembled into pieces to reveal unique structure such as high performance CPU / GPU cooling mechanism and special hinge

Display integrated PC released by Microsoft "Surface Studio"Is that the inclination of the display is freely adjustable with a unique hinge structure and that the dial type input terminal"Surface DialInnovative system such as being able to use "is adopted, and it is highly evaluated mainly by creators. Its Surface DialIFixitHave been disassembled into pieces and a number of original designs such as a special hinge part and a cooling mechanism for pushing high performance CPUs and GPUs into a small casing have been clarified.

Microsoft Surface Studio Teardown Review! - YouTube

Surface Studio is a display integrated desktop PC with a touch display compatible with 28 inch (4500 x 3000) Surface pen.

The main body of the PC which also serves as the base is equipped with a USB 3.0 port, a Mini DisplayPort, an SD card slot, and an earphone jack.

A speaker is mounted at the bottom of the display.

The decomposition work starts from removing the rubber on the bottom of the pedestal.

Remove Torx screw that appears ... ...

"Heavy-Duty Suction Cups"Remove the bottom panel.

It is a sirocco fan of two sizes, large and small.

Since there is a speaker cable extending from the motherboard, care must be taken to remove the bottom panel.

Fans which adopt brushless motor are made by Delta. Surface Studio has two built-in fans to cool the CPU and GPU with a large calorific value.

Removing the intermediate frame will reveal the internal structure.

In addition, the speaker is fixed to the intermediate frame with a rubber screw.

SSD can be accessed with intermediate frame removed.

Since SSD made by SanDisk is M.2 type, it can be exchanged for general purpose goods.

To remove the heat sink / heat pipe, remove the spacer.

The heat sink / heat pipe connecting the two fans is rather large.

In addition, it can be imagined that the GPU's heat generation amount is larger than that of the CPU on the GPU side.

Next, remove the 2.5 inch size HDD.

Seagate's HDD "ST1000LM024" is a common type of S-ATA connection, so replacing it with general-purpose parts is also easy.

This is an SD card slot module.

Red frame is Realtek's leader controller "RTS 5314", Orange frame is Macronix CMOS flash "MX25L1006E(PDF file) "

On the upper left of the image is the power supply unit.

The L-shaped power supply is made by LITON.

The interior is like this with a small sirocco fan to exhaust heat.

Removing the small headphone jack unit ......

You can access the motherboard.

The red frame is Intel CPU "Core i 5 - 6440 HQ", the yellow frame is NVIDIA GPU "GeForce GTX 965 M", the orange frame is Samsung DDR 4 memory "K4A4G085WE-BCPB(PDF file) "for a total of 8 GB on both sides.

On the back of the motherboard, the red frame is Hynix GDDR5 memory "H5GC4H24AJR" for GPU, the orange frame is K4A4G085WE - BCPB, the green frame is Realtek audio codec chip "ALC3269"

To disassemble the display part, heat the part of the frame and melt the adhesive before doing it.

Use a thin pick tool to cut into the adhesive.

Next, remove the pedestal part. Removing the cover of the hinge ......

Large and small two springs can be confirmed. The angle of the display from the vertical state to the horizontal state can be adjusted by multiple springs.

Remove pedestal from hinge part.

The body of the PC looks like this.

Two springs are also built in the PC body side.

Removing it with the back panel of the display ......

You can see reinforcing parts shaped as if the butterfly feathers.

This elongated part is a speaker unit.

The back side of the display looks something like this.

On the motherboard for multiple displays, the red frame is an LED converter manufactured by Monolithic Power Systems "M3387L"X904169 05 CL1631 T518907.1" in the orange frame, Microsoft chip "X904163 01 CL1634 4C39290-01" in the yellow frame, Micronix serial Nor flash "MX25U1635F" made by Micronix ARM chip "ATSAMS 70 N 21"

NT 96131 QG - 46 chip made by Novatech, blue flash memory "25 X 20 CL 1 G 2 Mb" with purple frame by Winbond

A red frame is a USB 3.1 hub controller made by Genesys Logic "GL 3520"Orange frame is NXP's audio amplifier chip"TFA 9890A(PDF file) ", a green frame is a MediaTek Wi - Fi receiver" MT7600UAN "

A unit with a 5 megapixel front camera, a microphone, and an infrared camera integrated was attached to the display part.

So by arranging the parts that disassembled Surface Studio apart, it will look like this.

The repair / disassembly difficulty level of Surface Studio which iFixit evaluates is "5" in 10 steps and medium degree of difficulty. The reason is that general form factors for storage such as M.2 type SSD and S-ATA type HDD are adopted, the display assembly is integrated with the display frame and easy to remove, memory · CPU · It is mentioned that GPU etc. are soldered and can not be exchanged, and some components included in the display are difficult to detach.
