How much speed improves when LAN cable changes 38 types Test result Summary

When you go to a home electronics mass merchant shop to buy a LAN cable, there are various kinds such as flat · ultra fine · stranded · category 5 · 5 · 6 · 6 a · 7, but emphasize when choosing a LAN cable Points are categories and are divided into 5, 5, 6, 6, 7, 5, 5 e, 6, 6 a, 7 in order of communication speed, transmission bandwidth, etc. become high performance and expensive. Also, even in the same category there are flat cables and flattened LAN cables that are flattened than usual, so we decided to actually measure and check whether there is a difference in communication speed.

◆ LAN cable collected

In order to ascertain the difference between each company and each product, as a result of searching on the condition that it can be used even at home, the length of selling is 5 meters, and the categories 5e, 6, 6a,Elecom·Sanwa Supply·Buffalo·MiyoshiIt is decided to measure a total of 38 kinds of LAN cables of the four companies.

The LAN cable actually collected is here.

I put it out of cardboard. Completely.

By category and by communication speed / transmission band, it becomes as follows.

Category 5e (CAT 5e) Communication speed 1 Gbps Transmission band 100 MHz

Category 6 (CAT 6) Communication speed 1 Gbps Transmission band 250 MHz

Category 6a (CAT 6a) Communication speed 10 Gbps Transmission band 500 MHz

Category 7 (CAT 7) Communication speed 10 Gbps Transmission band 600 MHz

◆ Measurement environment

Measurement was done in a server room with many noises in order to confirm the effect of the shielding that prevents noise as it becomes theoretical to make it not to be affected by noise as the category approaches "7" . The same kind of personal computer (Let's Note SX 1) is put on the front and the back of the rack where the server is located.

First, attach the LAN cable to one computer. The port speed corresponds to 1 Gbps, it is made by Intel.

Pass the front of the server.

Up.

Pass the server over the shelf on which it is located.

Then go through the back of the server ......

Connect to another computer. In fact, by passing near the server, it made the cable more susceptible to the influence of noise from the server group.

As the measuring software, the latest LAN speed measurement dedicated software "LAN Speed Test v 2.0.8I will use it. The reason for choosing this software is to exclude the influence of the cache function that Windows own system has. Because there are many cases where there are differences depending on the cache in transferring read / write files simply prepared, let's try to give more real measured values by using this software.

As a measurement rule, we measured 5 times per LAN cable and recorded the results of Writing and Reading. The unit uses Mbps. Categories 6a and 7 correspond to 10 Gbps, but this time we measured using a computer equipped with 1 Gbps Gigabit Ethernet adapter instead of 10 Gbps. Also, we stop all resident software such as antivirus software that influence speed, so that no communication or filtering other than measurement is taken. Furthermore, in order to suppress extreme errors and averaging, the maximum value and the minimum value for each cable are excluded, and the average value for each cable is calculated with the remaining value.

The maximum writing speed is about 630 Mbps, the minimum is about 607 Mbps, the difference is about 23 Mbps. The maximum reading speed is about 752 Mbps, the minimum is about 740 Mbps, the difference is about 12 Mbps. Both of the results show that the difference for each category is not as large as I thought. Will it actually move on to the next manufacturer's test as to whether Colle is peculiar to Elecom or whether other companies will have similar results.

The maximum writing speed is about 630 Mbps, the minimum is about 595 Mbps, and the difference is about 35 Mbps, which is quite a difference. However, the difference in reading speed is about 754 Mbps at the maximum, about 746 Mbps at the lowest, the difference is only about 8 Mbps. What is the difference for each category? It is as if you can not help being suspicious. I was feeling somewhat unpleasant feeling. We will move on to the next manufacturer's test.

The difference in reading speed is about 753 Mbps at the maximum, about 746 Mbps at the lowest, and the difference is only about 7 Mbps. What is the difference for each category? I was forced to doubt that the result has come out. Or, I have to say that "What was it with Category 7, what was it?"

◆ Compare 38 LAN cables

Now the horizontal axis is set as Reading speed and the vertical axis is set as Writing speed, and I plot the average speed for each product used in ranking. If the point of the LAN cable is on the upper right of the graph, the communication speed is faster in the LAN cable to be compared and the graph shows that the communication speed is slower as going to the lower left. Looking at this graph, you can see that the LAN cables of each company are concentrated in the upper right.

The maximum speed was about 754 Mbps, the minimum speed was about 735 Mbps, and the difference was about 19 Mbps. Even then again, category 1 is category 6, or proportionately to category 6, category 6 is stable and category 7 finally comes out in tenth place. Perhaps the time when Category 6 is being produced is long and history has its own history and can be produced with comparatively stable quality, but on the contrary Category 7 still has a short history so that quality is not stable. It is expected. Or, I do not know the reason why there is only this difference other than that (2012/06/13 10:41 postscript, Category 7 is not UTP (unshielded twisted pair) cableSTP (shielded twisted pair)Since it is a cable, that is, it is shielded, it is necessary to perform grounding, that is, "grounding" by using the equipment clearly stating "STP compliant", and if you are not properly grounded with STP compliant equipment and "The ground part of the outer skin becomes a conductor and the equipment of different electric potential (voltage accumulated in the equipment where ground is not properly done) contacts, it flows through the cable and in some cases sparks, To generate"There is a possibility that the situation will be such that" speed is reduced even though it is Category 7 "like this test result. It is speculated. There is almost no existing LAN hub for 1 Gbps that stipulates "STP compatible" in current consumer use models).

Moreover, as far as this result is seen, at the present momentThe difference for each category of LAN cables is actually no difference as much as it can be experienced when using it at about 1 Gbps for consumer useIt will be said that. In short, whichever you choose, there is no difference as much as singing in the efficacy writing about the difference in each category that is written on the back of the package etc. When it comes to this, you should be more concerned about the difference in price than the difference in categories.
So, finally ranked LAN cables with good cost performance. Compare how much Mbps speed (Mbps / yen) is coming out with 1 yen from the price displayed on Amazon and measured communication speed, and in a sense, let's look at the best LAN cable.
