Friday - Rebecca Black - Official Music Video - YouTube

The song is called 'Friday' and is sung by Rebecca Black, a 13-year-old girl living in California.

This is Rebecca Black.

Her parents asked a Los Angeles-based music company called Ark Music Factory to produce the song, and it was uploaded to YouTube last month.

The rather uninspired lyrics - 'Yesterday was Thursday Thursday, today it is Friday Friday' and 'tomorrow is Saturday, and Sunday comes afterwards' - appear to have attracted attention, with the song becoming a hot topic on Twitter.

The YouTube comment section is filled with over a million comments, including 'Your voice is infuriating,' 'It's ridiculous how kids act like adults in the video,' 'What a lame video,' 'Is she really 13?', 'She rocks!', and 'Seriously, I'm infuriated that she got all the views and money.' Apparently, many of the criticisms are along the lines of, 'The lyrics are just weird and childish,' 'The video is poorly made and unrealistic,' and 'Her voice is just annoying.'

The news magazine Time also described the song as 'a train wreck' and the video as 'laughably terrifying,' while globally popular singer Lady Gaga defended her, saying, ' I haven't seen it yet, but I think she's a genius. Anyone who says she's cheesy is a bastard .'

However, despite the negative reviews of the song, the fact that a song by a completely new artist has been played over 62 million times could be considered a great success for the singer.

Rebecca Black has also announced that she will donate 60% of her iTunes sales, which will likely be her share, to her school and Japan, as a way of 'making up for the media attention she has received at a time when Japan is in dire straits due to the earthquake.'
